Construction Begins on Ala Moana Boulevard Elevated Pedestrian Walkway

The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has started construction on its long-awaited elevated pedestrian walkway bridge across Ala Moana Boulevard between Ward Avenue and Kamakee Street. The walkway will connect Kewalo Basin to the Ward Village neighborhood, creating a more convenient connection over busy Ala Moana Boulevard. It accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, and brings Ward Village one step closer to fulfilling its complete vision of Live, Work, and Play!

HDOT has advised that there will be road closures on Ala Moana Boulevard. Nighttime construction work includes construction of the middle pier’s drilled shafts; installation of bridge planks across the roadway; installation of work platforms associated with bridge planks; concrete pours on the bridge deck and at pier and abutments; concrete pours for the bridge railings; superstructure work; trenching and ductwork for drainage and electrical systems across the roadway and site restoration activities such as median reconstruction, curb reconstruction, as well as roadway paving or reconstruction. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 2, 2022 through late Fall 2023.

Nighttime construction hours will consist of the following:

  • Sunday 7:00 p.m. to Monday 4:00 a.m.

  • Monday 7:00 p.m. to Tuesday 4:00 a.m.

  • Tuesday 7:00 p.m. to Wednesday 4:00 a.m.

  • Thursday 7:00 p.m. to Friday 4:00 a.m.

  • Occasional weekend construction hours: Friday 7:00 p.m. through Monday 4:00 a.m.
